Hazardous Area Classification

Hazardous Area Classification

Hazardous Areas exist in almost every plant. It is necessary to classify the area of release, and also assesses the probability of potentially explosive atmospheres occurring. Once the probability is established, ignition sources can be controlled to match the level of risk associated with the designated area.

Classification of the system is classed as Zone 0, 1, 2 for gases/vapours & Zone 20, 21, 22 for flammable solids.

How is a Hazardous Area Classification done?

HAC starts with a discussion with the plant personnel about their plant & equipment and a thorough understanding of their process and operations. Data and understanding of the fire and explosion characteristics of the dust, gases and liquids may be collated from the client or from standard literature. The site visit will make an independent Identification of sources of vapour, gas, dust release in the plant under normal and abnormal conditions as well as the extent of release.
Depending on the extent of release, the grade of release and an assessment of the degree and availability of existing ventilation, classification of the system into Zone 0, 1, 2, 20, 21, 22 or non-hazardous zone for flammable / combustible gases, liquid & dust handling locations is made.
We also provide recommendation on how to reduce frequency or extent of release and hence, improving the zone classification.
